Man of Steel is doing very well in the box office, bringing in $116 Million on it’s opening weekend, and totaling $400 million Worldwide, and the sequel has already been green-lit and fast tracked to go into production for a 2014 release. Zack Snyder is expected to return to the director’s chair, with David Goyer drafting another script.
Christopher Nolan’s role as Producer is less certain for the sequel. Nolan got co-story credit on “Man of Steel” and famously played a “godfathering” role on the Snyder movie. According to “Cosmic Book News”, Nolan will be playing a much smaller role in the sequel, which makes sense, as Nolan will be busy directing the movie “Interstellar”, coming out in 2014.
Another rumor from CBM is that Mark Strong is being considered for the role of Lex Luthor. Many fans will gripe about a powerless villain to combat Superman in the sequel, but you can’t have Superman without Lex. It would be like Batman without Joker. Archenemies are needed for heroes as iconic as Superman. Besides, we’ve seen Superman destroy half of Metropolis in a beat down with Zod, now it’s time for a villain who can attack his mind and soul.
As for the casting choice, I think Mark Strong is one of the best options Hollywood has to offer. Physically, he looks the part, and he definitely has the talent to pull off the hyper-intelligent business mogul with a god complex and serious superman envy. I think his role in “Body of Lies” shows his capability to be a serious, man in charge, and he is no stranger to comic book movies, having appeared in both “Kick Ass” and in “Green Lantern” as the eventual villain Sinestro.
At this point, Mark Strong’s involvement is just a rumor, but personally, I’d love to see it become true.
