The much anticipated film Ant-Man is getting it’s cast started with comedy star Paul Rudd in the lead role as scientist and superhero, Henry Pym aka Ant-Man. This casting is somewhat odd, considering Paul Rudd has almost exclusively acted in comedies, like the recent Anchorman 2 film. But this does line up with many of Marvel Studios’ unexpected choices for their films. Ant-Man director Edgar Wright was an odd choice when announced, and nobody understood why Kenneth Brannagh was directing Thor. But these choices usually pan out in the end.
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios has this to say about the casting:
When Edgar Wright came to us with the idea of Paul Rudd, we felt a huge sense of relief because the first step in creating any Marvel Studios film is finding the right star. We knew early on that we had found the right person in Paul. When he not only agreed to do it but became as enthusiastic as any actor we’d ever met with about doing the work, we knew we’d found the right guy. We couldn’t be more excited for our audiences to see what he’s going to do to bring Ant-Man to life.
Hank Pym is a biochemist who discovers what he calls “Pym Particles” which allow him to shrink down to the size of an insect. He also creates a device which allows him to communicate with insects. Throughout his time in the comics he alters the Pym Particles to allow him to grow to the same degree he used to shrink. He also takes on several alter egos including Ant Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket, and Giant-Man. This gives plenty of material to draw from for the movies, so let’s hope for the best.
